Considering current situation with COVID-19 all around world and Latvia as well, this year summer school will be held online (MS Teams).

Levels

The courses are mapped to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

Latvian A1

The course envisages the acquisition of the basics in the perception of the Latvian language, gradually developing reading, listening and speaking skills. The course syllabus is designed to help the learners function in elementary social situations, promote the acquisition of lexis, and form a firm basis for further communication in the target language. Having completed the course, the learners can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce themselves and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things they have. The learners can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

Latvian A2

The course aims at fostering the development of the skills acquired at level A1. The learners develop reading and listening comprehension skills; learn to offer their opinion and to present an argument. The contents of the course encourage the use of newly acquired vocabulary, which forms a solid basis for further communication. Having completed the course, the learners can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). They can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters as well as describe in simple terms aspects of their background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

Latvian B1

The aim of the course is to consolidate the acquired language knowledge and facilitate further development of the learners’ skills in the Latvian language. To reinforce the practical language skills, the course deals with regular and professional topics and situations, Latvian grammar structures and style. The form-focused exercises are integrated with meaning-focused experience using the communicative approach. Having completed the course, the learners can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. They can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken.  They can describe experiences and events and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Latvian B2

The aim of the course is to consolidate and further enhance the Latvian language skills. The study material is communicatively related to everyday topics and professional fields, as well as situation modelling. The course provides an insight into stylistics of the language use to enhance learners’ practical language skills. Having completed the course, the learners can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. They can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
